Thursday 12 February 2026 Year 3 - Rocks Year 3 have been learning about rocks! As part of this, they went on a rock hunt around the school, and found a variety of exciting specimens of various shapes, sizes, textures and hues. As they have started to discuss the 3 main types of rock (metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary as I'm sure we're all aware), the children could barely contain their excitement as we began to talk about which of these types our specimens could be. During their forthcoming quarry trip, the children will view experiments to determine which type of rock a specimen is, and they are looking forward to carrying out these tests on their own rock samples. Rock on!

Monday 9 February 2026 Year 4 Geography - Volcanic Eruption This week in Year 4, we have been learning all about volcanoes and the different types of eruptions. We explored explosive eruptions, effusive eruptions, Strombolian eruptions, Vulcanian eruptions, and Plinian eruptions. We discussed what makes each one different. To bring our learning to life, we worked together as a year group to create our own eruptions using Coca-Cola and Mentos. We watched the “volcanoes” explode and carefully observed what happened. Afterwards, we discussed which types of real volcanic eruptions our experiments were most similar to and explained why, using what we had learned. It was an exciting and memorable lesson that helped deepen our understanding of volcanoes.

Friday 23 January 2026 Year 4 Maths - Multiplying Using Counters Today, we used counters to help us multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number. We partitioned the two-digit number into tens and ones and shared the counters into equal groups. This helped us see the multiplication clearly and understand how the total was calculated.

Wednesday 21 January 2026 Year 1 International Day - Ireland Today is international Day! We learnt all about the country Ireland. We started the day by answering the register in Gaelic. Then we looked at the map of Ireland and learnt some facts. After that some of our classmates shared their Irish magnets and keyrings. We then got to partner with someone from Class 1. We worked together to go on a lucky Irish treasure hunt. We had to find all the pictures along the balcony to get the lucky coin sticker at the end. After that we worked with our partner to do colouring or a puzzle. Finally, during PE, we learnt an Irish dance step by step. We had to count lots of times to 4 or 8. We performed our dance to Miss Julia and Mrs Young who loved it! We had so much fun on International Day!

Tuesday 20 January 2026 Year 1 Problem Solving with RICE Today we spent time learning how to tackle word problems using RICE! We began by carefully reading the problem and identifying the important and helpful information. We learnt to recognise what ‘R’ stands for in a word problem. R = Read and Record. We then read through a selection of addition and subtraction problems together. We read, highlighted and identified what operation we needed to do to solve them. We worked like Maths Detectives…. What am I looking for? Numbers? Words? Which words are the important ones? We finished the lesson highlighting some problems and identifying whether we needed to write ‘add’ or ‘take away’ when we worked through the ‘R’ for RICE. We made a great start at tackling word problems today!

We acted out the story and talked about what it would be like if the whole school was full of porridge! To help us remember the key quotes, we ate porridge saying, “Cook little pot, cook!” When our tummies were full we said, “Stop little pot, stop!”

Friday 16 January 2026 Year 1 - An Unplanned Power Cut! Today we had an unplanned power cut at around 11am. This made it really tricky to carry on with our normal day because as we discussed – electricity powers lots of things! We took the opportunity to have a class chat about how we could resolve one of the really BIG issues, which was the Kitchen Staff not being able to cook us lunch! We came up with quite a lot of solutions as to how we could make sure everyone had a lunch. Mrs Carlock went to Tesco and bought some bread, cheese, ham and chocolate rolls! Typically at midday the power came back on, however we thoroughly enjoyed our class picnic!

Tuesday 13 January 2026 Year 1 Toys Take Over! Today, we came into class after our toys had a sleepover in Year 1. When we arrived, we couldn’t believe our eyes… Our toys had been SO naughty and taken over! We looked at and discussed the clues left behind to work out what mischief they'd been up to in the night. We discovered that they'd played with the pom poms, helped themselves to a snack, scribbled on the white boards, read a story, and even took some selfies using the photocopier! We had to let Mrs Carlock know, so we wrote her a recount of the events that took place. We created some lovely pieces of writing, and created some amazing portraits of our toys in Art!

Tuesday 13 January 2026 Year 5/6 Football - Somerset County Finals Having won the Yeovil Schools Games in November, Huish’s footballers arrived at the Somerset County Finals full of confidence and optimism. In extremely wet conditions, Huish got underway and it was a difficult start. A 1-1 draw was followed by a 1-0 defeat. With just three more group games to come, the team knew that only three wins would be enough to reach the semi-finals. As the conditions improved, so did our performances. Wins of 2-1, 3-0 and 4-0 meant a semi-final place was secured. Here we met familiar opposition in Milford and a close game in driving rain ended in a 1-0 Huish win. This meant a final against Bishop Henderson from Taunton, who the team had drawn with at the start of the day. It was Bishop Henderson who took the lead with an unstoppable strike and, despite Huish’s best efforts, the game ended in a 1-0 defeat. Once again, the team represented the school superbly. Every player demonstrated great skill, teamwork and resilience. The Huish players left f

Thursday 8 January 2026 Year 4 Maths - Make Change This week, pupils had the chance to visit the ‘Class 9 Shop’. Here, they were able to buy a range of items by paying with either a £10, £20 or £50 note. It was then up to our shop keepers to give them the correct change. We were then given a list of items and worked with a partner to calculate the correct change that would be given for each of the items in the list to the left. We discussed different strategies for working this out and shared these with the class.

Tuesday 16 December 2025 Year 1 Science - Waterproof or Absorbent? Today we explored two new scientific words - ‘waterproof’ and ‘absorbent'. We conducted a fair test to discover the properties of four different types of material, and discussed which material we felt would make the best umbrella. We found that metal and plastic were waterproof, and following discussion, decided that plastic would make the best umbrella because it can be dyed or see-through (transparent). We thoroughly enjoyed experimenting!

Monday 15 December 2025 Year 5 DT - Bridges This week was DT week- we learnt all about bridges! To begin with, we learnt about two types of bridges: an arch bridge and a beam bridge. We looked at the specialist subject vocabulary and a range of real bridges. We discussed the beams, arches, supports and walls. We then tested our bridge knowledge and made paper prototypes of bridges. Later on, we learnt about truss bridges. They are made up of lots of triangles. The triangles will help to take the pressure of the weight on a bridge. Finally, we learnt how to make our own wooden truss bridge. We had to measure our pieces of dowel very carefully to ensure our bridge parts were accurately assembled. We used Tenon saws to cut the dowel against a bench hook (being careful of our fingers!) then used sandpaper to smooth any rough edges. We then used a glue gun (which was very hot!) to glue our pieces of wood together. Next, we used card triangles as support. We assembled the bridge together which took a lot of team work but we did it
