Tuesday 16 December 2025 Year 1 Science - Waterproof or Absorbent? Today we explored two new scientific words - ‘waterproof’ and ‘absorbent'. We conducted a fair test to discover the properties of four different types of material, and discussed which material we felt would make the best umbrella. We found that metal and plastic were waterproof, and following discussion, decided that plastic would make the best umbrella because it can be dyed or see-through (transparent). We thoroughly enjoyed experimenting!

Monday 15 December 2025 Year 4 DT - Torches This week, as part of our Design and Technology unit, we had a go at making our own torches. We began by analysing different torches that are already available on the market. We then chose one of two pupils to make a torch for and created a design to fit their personal specifications. We set about making our torches out of recycled materials. Using what we had learnt in science about electricity, we built working circuits with switches to fit inside our torch cases to make them light up. Once our torches were complete, we considered what went well and what we would change next time while writing some evaluations.

Friday 12 December 2025 Year 1 DT - Christmas Biscuits Today we made Christmas biscuits! First, we talked about how to be safe when cooking and we created a list of rules to follow. After that we got into our groups and began to bake. We carefully measured out the ingredients using scales. Then we put the ingredients altogether in the small bowl. Next we rubbed the ingredients together to make crumbs and balled the dough together. Then we had to roll the dough out gently using a rolling pin. We selected our cutter that we chose when designing and cut our biscuits. Finally, we put them on a tray ready to be put in the oven. They smelt delicious!

Thursday 11 December 2025 Year 4 Science - Sounds (Pitch and Volume) To conclude our topic on sound, we had a go at designing and creating our very own musical instruments. As part of our planning process, we had to think about the materials we would use and how we would go about making them. We also had to consider how we could change the volume and pitch of the sounds created by our instruments. In today's lesson, we used recycled materials to create the instruments. Later in the lesson, we had the chance to share them with the rest of the class!

Thursday 4 December 2025 Year 2 Careers Related Learning This afternoon we were lucky enough to have a visit from Mark who works at the NHS. He came to speak to us about the vital work that the NHS do to help people. We discussed some of the important jobs that people in the NHS do before thinking about what it is like to work in a hospital. We shared with him our knowledge of Florence Nightingale and he told us about how hospitals have changed since the Victorian era. These changes included cleanliness, uniforms and knowledge of medicines. Some of us even got to try on the uniforms!

Tuesday 25 November 2025 Year 4 Art Week - Roman Pottery During Art Week, we have been looking at Roman pottery. We have looked at a range of Roman pottery and learnt about the difference between coarse and fine ware. We then analysed two Roman pots, looking at the size, shape, colour and designs. Next, we looked at some more pots in detail and discussed what was similar and different about them. This helped us to create explorative drawings of different features of the pots, such as the handle, base, design and shape. We spent a lesson experimenting with clay. This involved using different methods to shape it into a pot, as well as to create patterns and designs in the clay. We designed our Roman pots in our sketchbooks, thinking carefully about the shape, size and decoration. Finally, we used the skills we had developed so far to create our own Roman clay pots!

Monday 24 November 2025 Year 2 DT - Bread Tasting/Making In Year 2 we started our new DT topic, all about bread. We started by briefly looking at the process of making bread and mapped out where different breads came from all over the world. We then taste tested different breads such as brioche, wholemeal and pitta bread. We discussed their shapes, sizes, tastes and textures and looked at how each bread was used in the culture that it came from. Later on in the term, we were lucky enough to make some fresh bread rolls ourselves. We used design sheets to figure out which ingredients and equipment we would need, and then set to work creating our bread rolls! Once they had cooled down, we taste tested them. We completed an evaluation sheet which helped us identify what went well during our bread roll making and things we could improve on next time.

Friday 14 November 2025 Reception PSHE - I'm Special, You're Special In our PSHE lesson this week, we have thought about what we look like. We carefully felt our own faces, gently paying attention to particular features. We examined our faces closely in a mirror, thinking about the shapes we could see and how different features of our faces looked. We talked about how we are all different to each other and no two of our faces look the same and that it is important that we respect ourselves and others. In groups, we tried to assemble cut-up photos of ourselves from a jumble of eyes, noses and mouths which made us really have to look carefully!

Thursday 13 November 2025 South Somerset Schools Football Tournament Huish competed in the South Somerset Schools Football tournament with high hopes after a number of well contested friendly games. They began the group stage with a competitive game against a familiar opponent – Milford. Over the past few years, the two schools have played a number of times and the games have always been close. On this occasion, Huish went 1-0 down early but fought back to draw 1-1. The team went on to dominate the remainder of the group stage winning 5-0, 1-0 and 5-0 again. These results led the team into a semi-final against Holy Trinity which was a tough game, but a late winner from Poppy sealed a 1-0 win. In the final, Milford were the opponents once again and Huish were well up for the game. Despite attack after attack, the Milford goalkeeper made some excellent saves to keep the score at 0-0. It took a cool finish from Luca to put Huish ahead.

We first discussed what makes us sad (such as unkind hands, not sharing etc.) After that, we watched a clip of Inside Out where Bing-Bong was sad. Joy couldn’t cheer him up with her happiness, however Sadness cheered him up by listening and talking about his problems. She even gave him a hug. We then discussed ways to deal with our friends or others being sad.

Friday 7 November 2025 Year 4 Roman Day For our Roman Day, we all came into school dressed in Roman outfits. During the day, we took part in lots of activities to begin to learn about what life as a Roman soldier might be like. In the morning, we recapped some of our previous learning about Roman Numerals. We then designed our own Roman mosaic shields based on traditional designs, considering the meaning of each of the elements of the crest. We later created them ready for our battle in the afternoon. After lunch, we went learnt how to march and move in a variety of different formations. Our favourites were The Tortoise, The Wedge and The Orb. Once we were confident with our formations, we had tag battles between the classes taking it in turns to act as the Romans and the unsuspecting Celts. We all thoroughly enjoyed our day and are looking forward to learning more about the Romans.
