Monday 15 December 2025 Year 5 DT - Bridges This week was DT week- we learnt all about bridges! To begin with, we learnt about two types of bridges: an arch bridge and a beam bridge. We looked at the specialist subject vocabulary and a range of real bridges. We discussed the beams, arches, supports and walls. We then tested our bridge knowledge and made paper prototypes of bridges. Later on, we learnt about truss bridges. They are made up of lots of triangles. The triangles will help to take the pressure of the weight on a bridge. Finally, we learnt how to make our own wooden truss bridge. We had to measure our pieces of dowel very carefully to ensure our bridge parts were accurately assembled. We used Tenon saws to cut the dowel against a bench hook (being careful of our fingers!) then used sandpaper to smooth any rough edges. We then used a glue gun (which was very hot!) to glue our pieces of wood together. Next, we used card triangles as support. We assembled the bridge together which took a lot of team work but we did it

Friday 12 December 2025 Year 5 Wessex Water Visit Today, we were visited by Sam from Wessex Water. She talked to us about our ‘Rivers’ topic and was impressed with our knowledge. Sam built on our learning by teaching about: water safety, the water cycle, how much water is used and wasted in our area, how water is extracted from rivers, flooding and the sewage systems. Her activities were really interesting and helped us to understand why rivers are such important resources to look after. Before she left Sam explained some career opportunities at Wessex Water and the skills needed to perform in these different roles.

Monday 20 October 2025 Year 5 Art Week - African Art This week was Art Week! We have been studying African Art and an artist called Gakonga. We studied Gakonga’s art work and created a mood board to express our thoughts and feelings about his work. Then we practised our paint colour blending of warm colours and made different shades by adding white or black. We were really proud of our final pieces and we enjoyed learning about Africa and its artwork!
