Year R - How Adults Help Us
As part of their topic, ‘How adults help us’, reception children looked at what firefighters do and how they keep us safe, talking about the varied role of a firefighter and how they rescue people in many different situations. Next, they discussed fire fighters’ uniforms and explored how they protect them . The children had lots of fun making fire fighter themed handprint pictures over the course of the week and particularly enjoyed adding ink facial expressions. To finish off the week, Leonardo firefighters came into school with their fire engine! Neil and Ed talked to us about their uniform and how it keeps them safe, as well as how they use their tools to rescue people. They put on the blue flashing lights and sirens for us and we all had a turn using the hose to shoot water across the school field. It was very heavy!
After discussing many other roles, they thought about what a dentist does and how they help us. The children shared their experiences of visiting a dentist and things they expect to see. They talked about how to keep their teeth healthy by thorough cleaning them and eating foods and drinks which are low in sugar and listened to the ‘Clean your Teeth’ song. The children had lots of fun in their dentist role play area, booking appointments and looking after patients! Finally, they enjoyed a visit from Tilly- a dental practitioner– who came to talk about how to look after their teeth. Finally, this week , the children have enjoyed a lovely walk in the sun to visit Yeovil Library where they met the local librarian and talked about the role that they do. They enjoyed looking through the shelves of books and choosing their favourite one to read and share with their classmates. After half term they are looking forward to meeting a member of the local police force.
